Alteration
From OblivioWiki
Alteration is a magic arts skill that involves the manipulation of parts of the physical world and its natural properties. It includes the ability to walk on water and breathe it, open locks, shield oneself from physical and magical damage, and alter a player's encumbrance. The Cheydinhal Mage's Guild specializes in Alteration.

[edit] Alteration leveling tips
- Casting a weak Open Lock spell on a door with high-level lock increases your Alteration indefinitely. Some purists believe this is in fact cheating, or at least manipulating.

When your alteration skill is 70 or higher, NPC's will say "You look skilled in Alteration. Perhaps you can teach me a bit."
[edit] Usefulness
Alteration is an excellent school to enchant your armors with. Feather, Water Breathing/Walking, and Shield are good in their own right. If you happen to run out of lockpicks, an Open Lock spell can help you. If you have created a new character this is a class you want to put practice into because you can get more money by carrying more goods if you have a feather spell and if you are low on health and about to die you can use a burden spell to slow down or even encumber the enemy so you can escape and heal before re-initiating combat again. Also, if you have enough grand soul gems and have access to the Arcane University, you can enchant clothing and jewelry to have 100% shield. In this way, you will not be damaged, and the clothing can't be worn down.
